ICANN requires registrars to verify the e-mail address associated with the domain registrant contact for gTLD domains (for example .com, .net, .org).
This verification confirms that the e-mail address provided in the registrant contact details is valid and reachable.
All domains associated with the same registrant contact share the same e-mail verification status.
If you did not receive the verification e-mail
If you did not receive the verification message:
If the domain is suspended due to missing verification
If the e-mail verification is not completed within 15 days, the domains associated with the registrant contact may be suspended.
To restore normal domain operation, it is necessary to complete the e-mail verification procedure.
Once the verification is completed, the domain will be automatically reactivated.
It is recommended not to wait until the last moment to resolve the situation. Some actions required to restore the domain may involve temporary transfer restrictions.
If you plan to transfer the domain to another provider, it is advisable to complete the verification in advance.
If the registrant e-mail verification is not completed within 15 days from the request, all domains associated with that registrant contact may be suspended until the verification process is completed.
When verification is required
Registrant e-mail verification may be required in the following cases:
- registration of a new gTLD domain;
- transfer of a domain;
- changes to registrant contact details (name, company name, or e-mail address).
How to verify the e-mail address
After registering or transferring a domain, a verification message will be sent to the e-mail address specified in the registrant contact.
To complete the procedure:
- open the message received;
- click the verification link contained in the e-mail.
Once the procedure is completed, the registrant e-mail address will be considered verified.
Automatic reminders
If the registrant e-mail address has not yet been verified, the system periodically sends a reminder containing the list of domains for which verification is still pending and their deadlines.
These messages are sent to the main account e-mail address.
What to do if the registrant e-mail address is no longer valid
If a domain was registered or transferred using an e-mail address that is no longer active or accessible, the verification procedure cannot be completed.
If it is not possible to regain access to that mailbox, you must open a support ticket to report the issue and evaluate possible corrective actions.
Be careful when changing the registrant e-mail address
Changes to registrant contact data, including the e-mail address, require an approval procedure.
For this reason, it is important to update the e-mail address before starting domain registrations or transfers if the current one is no longer valid.
If you realize only afterwards that you used a registrant contact with an invalid e-mail address, it may not be possible to complete the verification required for the domain registration or transfer.
Recommendation
If you have a registrant contact with an invalid e-mail address and need to register a new domain, it is recommended to create a new registrant contact with a correct e-mail address and use it for the registration.
This avoids using a registrant contact with an invalid e-mail address for other domains, which could also be suspended due to missing verification.
Note
The procedures described above do not replace any additional verification processes that individual registries may require.
